Hotel near Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est: where to drop your bags

Façade of Gare du Nord in Paris

Sleeping right opposite the station is expensive and rarely pleasant. Our tips for choosing the right hotel around Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est.

Arriving in Paris at Gare du Nord or Gare de l'Est puts you right in the heart of the city — but not necessarily in the neighbourhood where you want to sleep. Hotels set right opposite the stations live off passing trade, and charge for it. A few metro stops further on, you'll find better, cheaper options, on streets where you'll actually want to linger in the evening.

The right distance: ten minutes, not zero

The rule we give our guests is simple: look for a hotel one stop or fifteen minutes' walk from your station, not right outside it. You keep the convenience of arriving with your luggage, and you swap a transit zone for a neighbourhood with real life.

The immediate surroundings of Gare du Nord are a case in point: very well connected, but noisy and not very pleasant after dark.

Our closest address: the 10th, near République

Our hotel near Canal Saint-Martin, on boulevard de Magenta, is the best base for both stations. Metro line 5 runs directly from République to Gare de l'Est and then Gare du Nord, with no change: the journey takes just a few minutes. On foot, Gare de l'Est is about fifteen minutes up the boulevard.

The neighbourhood's big advantage: you're a stone's throw from Canal Saint-Martin and Place de la République, surrounded by restaurants and bars open late, in an area far livelier than the station surroundings. Its 28 rooms and 24-hour reception also make it a great base for late Eurostar arrivals.

For an early-morning train: stay on the line

If you're leaving early, what matters isn't the distance as the crow flies but the number of changes. Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est are both served by lines 4 and 5, and Gare de l'Est also by line 7.

That's what makes Hôtel Léman Opéra, on rue de Trévise, a smart choice for a departure from Gare de l'Est: Cadet station, on line 7, is a few minutes' walk from the hotel. You sleep in the heart of the 9th arrondissement, between the Grands Boulevards and the Opéra Garnier, and reach the station without changing.

If you're here for the north of Paris

Many travellers arriving at Gare du Nord actually spend their stay in Montmartre. In that case, you might as well sleep there: our hotel near the Sacré-Cœur, on rue Aristide Bruant, puts you at the foot of the Butte, two streets from Abbesses. Gare du Nord is easy to reach, and you sleep in a village-like neighbourhood rather than a station district.

When to book

Hotel demand around the stations in the north of Paris follows three peaks: school holiday departures and returns, the city's major events, and trade fair periods. Outside these windows, booking one to two weeks ahead is usually enough. For a stay during a trade fair or a long weekend, allow two to three months instead.

Either way, booking direct on our website is up to 15% cheaper than on booking platforms — a difference that quickly adds up over several nights.

Travelling as a group?

For groups and teams, booking room by room quickly becomes unmanageable. Beyond three rooms, our dedicated team takes over and puts together a tailor-made proposal, possibly spread across several of our nearby hotels: visit our group booking page.
